DELF, DALF And TCF: Everything You Need To Know
If you’re planning to study, work, or live in a French-speaking country, you’ve likely come across terms like DELF, DALF, and TCF. These are widely recognized French language proficiency tests, each serving different purposes. Understanding their differences and knowing how to prepare can make a big difference in achieving your goals. Here’s what you need to know.
DELF (Diplôme d’Études en Langue Française)
DELF is designed for beginners and intermediate learners, covering levels A1 to B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It’s an excellent choice for individuals who want to certify their general French proficiency.
DALF (Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française)
DALF, on the other hand, targets advanced learners and corresponds to levels C1 and C2 of the CEFR. This test is ideal for those who need to demonstrate a high level of French for academic or professional purposes.
TCF (Test de Connaissance du Français)
Unlike DELF and DALF, which are diplomas, TCF is a certificate that assesses general French language skills. It’s often used for immigration, university admissions, or professional requirements. TCF is flexible and can be taken for various purposes, such as TCF Canada or TCF for French nationality.
